Pope Benedict XVI Endangers Public Health

(03-20-09)-- While on a flight to Cameroon on Tuesday to begin a weeklong journey through Africa, Pope Benedict XVI said, "You can't resolve [the AIDS epidemic] with the distribution of condoms. On the contrary, it increases the problem." Pope Benedict XVI continues to promote the message on HIV/AIDS that condoms are useless. Against all known science this man promotes his belief, and sentences to death many around the world.

This is the first time that a Papal authority has said that the use of condoms could spread HIV/AIDS. Clearly this divisive Pope is out of touch if he confuses reality with dogma, and by doing so sentences innocents to death. His words will kill as surely as suicide bombers kill. It is time to remove the Vatican from the community of the United Nations. < /SPAN>It is also time to hold the Pope accountable to the community of nations for the genocide he is promoting.

The Rainbow Sash Movement agrees with the French Foreign Ministry, "We consider that these statements endanger public health policies and the imperative to protect human life." The pope, violates the "imperative to protect human life." Benedict is dangerous.

Clueless religious leaders who preach religion and call it science aggravate the problems of HIV/AIDS. This is just as stupid as calling the earth flat, without the associated deaths of so many innocents. Rebecca Hodes from the Treatment Action Campaign said, "[Pope Benedict XVI's] opposition to condoms conveys that religious dogma is more important to him than the lives of Africans."

This Pope deserves to be isolated on the global scene. The Catholic Church has become one of the most irresponsible institutions on the international scene under his watch, siding with countries like Sudan and Iran when it comes to imprisoning or executing LGBT people, and now flagrantly saying that condoms spread HIV.

Joe Murray, Executive Director, Rainbow Sash Movement said “As someone born into the Roman Catholic Church, it is especially difficult for me to reconcile how a religion that claims to represent the best spiritual interests of more than a billion people can be so out of touch with the reality of the earthly needs of its members. The Pope is losing his relevance when his pronouncements fly in the face of today’s realities. Opting for dogma over compassion the Pope shows how removed he has become from the world’s plight”.
