LEAGUE Foundation awards 8 college scholarships to GLBT youth

08-23-08-- Bedminster, NJ -- LEAGUE Foundation announces 2008 scholarship winners. Completing its 12th year, LEAGUE Foundation continues it mission by awarding 8 college scholarships.

"Every student has the right and the potential to excel. The LEAGUE Foundation provides financial resources for Americaís Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender youth to attend institutions of higher learning to meet this mission."

Key selection criteria for these students include: identification as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, or Transgender; achievement of a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale; actively and substantially involved in community service; and acceptance to an accredited college or university.

Executive Director, Charles Eader said, "2008 was a banner year for LEAGUE Foundation as we received a record number of student applications from all over the United States and with contributions on the rise we are able for the first time to offer a total of 8 scholarships."

LEAGUE Foundation awarded the Laurel Hester Memorial Scholarship in conjunction with The Personal Liberty fund of the NJ Lesbian and Gay Coalition. This award was named after the Ocean County, NJ Police Lieutenant who successfully battled county freeholders for the right to leave her pension and other benefits to her surviving domestic partner. Laurelís struggle was documented in the 2008 Academy Award winning film, "Freeheld", directed by filmmaker, Cynthia Wade. The 2008 Laurel Hester Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $2,500 was awarded to Jordan Christopher Tracy, of St. Joseph, MO. Mr. Tracy will be attending the Missouri Western State University and plans on studying graphic design.

This yearís Matthew Shepard Memorial Scholarship (name used with permission of the Shepard family), named for the Wyoming college student murdered in 1998 for his sexual orientation, was awarded in the amount of $2,500 to Anthony (Tonei) Glavinic of Anchorage, AK.. Mr. Glavinic will be attending American University in Washington, DC and plans on studying political science.

Six Additional scholarships in the amount of $1,500 each were awarded to:

Adam Dobson of Cranberry Township, PA (University of Pittsburgh)
Roberto Flotte, Jr. of Presidio, TX (University of TX in Austin)
Jennifer Harkin of Vancouver, WA (Evergreen State, WA)
Nicholas Pittarides of Danville, CA (University of Southern CA, Los Angeles)
Michelle Rattoballi of Eastchester, NY (George Mason University, VA)
